After the Japanese PSP Adventure, here’s another collection of homebrew game reviews which must have been overlooked by English speakers.

Der PSP Almanach project was a massive undertaking which sought to condense all the main scene developments into a neat printable format. Created by the German scener Olaf Split (splitti79), it continued to be updated until late 2007.

While its tips in the realm of console hacking have long since become irrelevant, the tome contains a sizeable chunk of reviews of homebrew games which remain current for all PSP owners who want to go beyond the usual Doom and Minecraft ports.

The original PDF remains available here, while the reviews are presented below in a slightly less print-friendly and definitely more understandable format.

Table Top Rally

This game has a very nice menu interface, different music tracks and even different types of vehicles. There are two different game modes, and in both the task is to keep the vehicle damage-free. The visual design gives hope for much more, but the fun of the game quickly falls by the wayside. The rating is positively influenced by the attention to detail.

Zorblocks

This quite well-known puzzle game increases the addictiveness PSP. The task is to remove tiles of the same color and have no tiles left at the end. The homebrew impresses with the different difficulty levels and the thus never-ending tasks.

The Icarus Project (Final Version)

In this puzzle game, with 15 different levels, the task is to bring different types of bricks into a field, so that it is filled and no brick lies over the edge. A great puzzle fun, even for several people.

Sudoku

The classic on the PSP. This is a visually appealing implementation of the number puzzle. The goal is to fill each row with the numbers from one to nine, but equally to fill the nine squares with these numbers. The game comes with several languages and stands out not only because of that. Another treat are the skins that you can download from the Internet.

Der Klassiker auf der PSP. Dies ist eine optisch ansprechende Umsetzung des Zahlenrätsels. Ziel ist es, jede Reihe mit den Zahlen von eins bis neun zu bestücken, aber ebenso die neun Felder mit diesen Zahlen zu füllen. Das Spiel bringt mehrere Sprachen mit und zeichnet sich nicht nur dadurch aus. Ein weiters Schmankerl sind die Skins, die Sie sich im Internet downloaden können.

Lua Tennis

A variation of the well-known game Pong in tennis optics. Two players can measure their strength, the computer can be challenged or just the ball machine can be used. The game is quite simple and it only reminds of tennis, because of the corresponding optics.

The goal of the game is to fly as far and as unharmed as possible with your plane and shoot down as many enemies as possible. Unfortunately, the tested version still lacks music and sound. The visuals get boring in the long run and the fun of the game evaporates.

Very successful Pong clone that convinces with its different views. Two different game modes are available. Saved MP3 / WMA tracks can be played. The special thing about this game is that the first version was originally developed in 48 hours.

Very good Sudoku. The menu is clear. Loading and saving of saved games is possible and the music can be selected via the saved MP3 / WMA tracks. A special feature are built-in solution guides. Also for beginners a successful homebrew game, which can convince in all respects.

A successful Lumines clone that comes up trumps with changing designs. Indispensable for Lumines fans. The sound is unfortunately a bit monotonous in the long run. The task of the game is to form a block of at least four tiles of the same color and to leave as few tiles as possible.

Ein gelungener Lumines-Klon, der mit wechselnden Designs trumpft. Für Lumines-Fans unverzichtbar. Der Sound ist auf Dauer leider etwas monoton. Die Aufgabe des Spiels besteht darin, dass ein Block von mindestens vier gleichfarbigen Steinen gebildet wird und möglichst keine Steine liegen bleiben.

This game makes your fingers dance over the controls and tests your reaction. The Revolution series has many versions with different designs and sounds. Nintendo Style features a lot of old Nintendo classics and the sounds that go with them. Once tuned in, however, the fun of the game is rather short.

Callisto is a space 2D shooter reminiscent of the arcade. A lot of details and different enemies make the game more and more exciting. But be careful, the enemies are fast and the game is not easy to solve. Boredom = a dead giveaway.

Attack Of The Mutants (AOTM)

Similar to the old cult game Asteroids. Here you can only shoot in four directions. A really good alternative to the Asteroids games, with the visual elements adding to the fun. There are massive designs to change around, from Star Wars to Mars Attacks to Burgers, everything is available.

Ähnlich wie das alte Kultspiel Asteroids. Hier kann man nur in vier Richtungen schießen. Eine wirklich gute Alternative zu den Asteroids-Spielen, wobei die optischen Elemente den Spielspass fördern. Try to hit the circle before it touches all four walls. With better graphics and sound the game would be far better, however the gameplay is really good and you are left wanting more, but also more design.

Deliver the order as quickly as possible, reorder food or turn on the fryer. Speed and getting the right food on the tray is what counts here. There are different difficulty levels, single and multiplayer modes. Another design lets McDonalds show off as Mario’s kitchen.

A Geometry Wars clone from the XBOX with nice graphics solution. The controls take a bit of getting used to, but can be changed depending on the version. All in all, TrigWars is a respectable game, which is very refreshing with its upbeat design and shows that a game can be designed well with simple means.

Nice pool game in which the graphic elements could be improved. Single and multiplayer modes are available and the difficulty level is adjustable. The controls are kept simple and even every pool beginner has a chance here.

Unfortunately, the game is not convincing. It has the character of a C64 classic, but it is not visually appealing compared to today’s games. For real C64 friends, this nostalgic game might be a highlight, but for the general public it is rather expandable.

Visually, PSP Monopoly can still catch up a bit, but the game otherwise works almost flawlessly. The texts also overlap the playing field at times, so that they are hardly legible. Perhaps the one or other detail will increase the fun factor in a new version?

Optisch kann PSP Monopoly noch etwas aufholen, jedoch funktioniert das Spiel ansonsten fast fehlerfrei. Die Texte überlappen zeitweise auch aus das Spielfeld, sodass diese kaum lesbar sind. Vielleicht werden die einen oder anderen Details bei einer neuen Version den Faktor Spaß erhöhen?

In this game you shoot pesky bugs from a bird’s eye view. Very nicely designed. Kind of an Asteroids clone that also scores in factor fun due to the design. The controls make the game a bit complicated, but after a few tries you get used to it.

2D shooter set in the Second World War. The graphical details make the game a bit more fun, but the game is quite simple. The enemies are numerous and fire from all guns, so you won’t get bored while playing.

Very nice Jump’N’Run game. Unfortunately, the shareware of the Windows version is required. The game runs smoothly. The menu options could not be adjusted in this release, so the game is only playable with the default settings. It should be noted that this review refers to a development version.

Sehr nettes Jump’N’Run Spiel. Leider wird die Shareware der Windows Version benötigt. Das Spiel läuft flüssig. Biohazard

Zombie shooter inspired by Resident Evil. Very balanced game, which has combined two different games. In the bird’s eye view you look for a key and keep the zombies at bay. Look for the exit to go through another level. Then drive to the next location and flatten the zombies, but be careful, not all of them are zombies.

An Resident Evil angelehnter Zombie-Shooter. Sehr ausgewogenes Spiel, welches zwei unterschiedliche Spiele vereint hat. In der Vogelperspektive suchen Sie einen Schlüssel und halten Sie sich die Zombies vom Leib. Suchen Sie den Ausgang um ein weiteres Level zu bestreiten. Dann fahren Sie zum nächsten Ort und fahren die Zombies platt, aber Vorsicht, nicht alle sind Zombies.

This Tetris clone brings life to the old game with the design and spiced up sound. Another mode is included, but superficially is Tetris. The classic convinces with a lot of fun on the PSP and awakens the desire for Tetris after a short time.

Dieser Tetris-Klon bringt mit dem Design und aufgepeppten Sound Leben in das alte Spiel. Ein weiterer Modus ist enthalten, aber vordergründig ist Tetris. Der Klassiker überzeugt mit viel Spaß auf die PSP und erweckt die Lust auf Tetris nach kurzer Zeit.

Ghost in the Matrix

Based on the cult movie “The Matrix”, this game features the famous Matrix code. The player is part of the code and has to avoid white agents. The entire game takes place in the code. It’s something for real Matrix fans and it’s also fun, but it’s a bit simple.

Angelehnt an den Kultfilm „The Matrix“ besticht dieses Spiel mit dem berühmten Matrix-Code. Der Spieler ist Teil des Codes und muss weißen Agenten ausweichen. Das komplette Spiel findet im Code statt. Es ist etwas für echte Matrix Fans und macht auch Spaß, allerdings ist es etwas einfach.

Deal or No Deal

The TV show on the PSP. Choose from one of 26 suitcases and ersoccen the money from the bank. The less money on the left side of the screen, the higher the bank’s offer. The sound is not completely coherent, but gives the right feeling of the TV show of the same name. The rather simple game is fun thanks to the familiarity of the TV show and the successful implementation. Unfortunately, the gaming fun doesn’t last long.

Die Fernsehshow auf der PSP. Wählen Sie aus einen von 26 Koffern und ersoccen Sie sich das Geld von der Bank. Je weniger Geldbeträge auf der linken Bildschirmseite sind, desto höher wird das Angebot der Bank. Der Sound ist nicht völlig stimmig, aber vermittelt das richtige Gefühl der gleichnamigen TV-SHow. Das recht simple Spiel macht Dank der Bekanntheit der TV-Show und der gelungenen Umsetzung Spaß. Der Spielspaß hält leider nicht lange an.

Another classic puzzle game. Remove the same stones to move up a level. Note that sometimes you have to build bridges with the stones and usually only one solution is possible. Very many options professionally grade the game.

Great Marion clone based on SuperTux. Controls, graphics and music are in harmony here. Highly recommended. The sound makes you think back to old GameBoy times. Occasionally there was a crash or problems with the saved games. Further modifications are announced, e.g. in the direction of Donkey Kong.

Toller Marion-Klon basierend auf SuperTux. Steuerung, Grafik und Musik sind hier im Einklang. Sehr empfehlenswert. Der Sound lässt an alte GameBoy-Zeiten zurückdenken. This 3D shooter, which is available as shareware for testing or can be purchased and played on the PSP, is a Doom successor. The game runs performant, but crashed from time to time. Visually appealing space shooter. Strongly reminiscent of the already presented game Noiz2SA. There is always an enemy that attacks with different weapons. The small ship is equipped with a protective shield, which you can optionally switch on.

This successful Breakout/Arkanoid clone will delight you. It convinces with small details. In this game, the PSP is held upright to play. Due to the really fast ball and the good implementation, long game fun is guaranteed here. However, you also have to bring ambition, because the ball requires very fast reactions!

Dieser gelungene Breakout/Arkanoid-Klon wird Sie begeistern. Er überzeugt durch kleine Details. Bei diesem Spiel wird die PSP zum spielen hochkant gehalten. Tiff Penguin Scramble

Fly with the penguin through a cave landscape without crashing. These games were strongly represented in other visuals in C64 times. The game fun doesn’t last, but the funky penguin is worth a look.

Solitaire Mahjongg

Very good Mahjongg clone. Uncover identical tiles, but watch out for the numbers on the tiles, they have to be identical as well. The tiles seem a bit small, respectively for the PSP display the game is hard on the border. Unfortunately, no sound is integrated, which diminishes the conclusion.

Sehr guter Mahjongg-Klon. Decken Sie gleichartige Steine auf, aber achten Sie auf die Zahlen auf den Steinen, diese müssen ebenso identisch sein. Die Steine wirken etwas klein, bzw. für das PSP Display ist das Spiel hart an der Grenze. Leider ist keinerlei Sound integriert, was das Fazit schmälert.

PSPiCross

The numbers indicate contiguous errors in a line. If the puzzle is solved, then you can enjoy a symbol, letters or even a small picture. This puzzle fun has it in itself, because large levels are very time-consuming to solve. The game comes with massive levels, so you can throw yourself into another round of iCross without any worries.

Die Zahlen zeigen zusammenhängende Fehler in einer Zeile an. Ist das Rätsel gelöst, dann kann man sich über ein Symbol, Buchstaben oder gar ein kleines Bild freuen. Dieser Knobelspaß hat es in sich, denn große Level sind sehr zeitaufwendig zu lösen. Dem Spiel liegen massig Level bei, so dass man sich sorglos in eine weitere Runde iCross werfen kann.

The cult game will not be missing for long on the PSP for friends of Quake. The 3D shooter performs very well and the display is fully utilized. The aliens won’t be in charge for long.

The old game Turrican as a homebrew for the PSP. It is still in development, but even the few minutes of play make the game a pleasure. Many different enemies, soon to be bosses, make the variety in this game never ending. This homebrew should not be missing on any PSP and is highly recommended.

Use mirrors and other tools to guide the laser beam to the diamonds. Many levels do not let boredom arise. Very tricky puzzle game. The game has a very good menu structure and addictive potential.

Adapted from the grouse game, the duck hunt is opened here. Just shoot the ducks. The difficulty lies in the controls, since they keep jumping back and have to be operated delicately. If the game is optimized further, then it could become a real classic.

Angelehnt an das Moorhuhn-Spiel wird hier die Entenjagd eröffnet. Schießen Sie die Enten einfach ab. Die Schwierigkeit besteht in der Steuerung, da diese immer wieder zurückspringt und feinfühlig bedient werden muss. Wenn das Spiel weiter optimiert wird, dann könnte daraus ein echter Klassiker werden.

A baller game in comic design. The goal is to shoot down the strange monsters. In two player mode you have to try to collect more points than your opponent. The comic design gives the game an attractive character.

Lua Icy Tower

This clone of the game Icy Tower by PSPsource member fredddy was created for the LUA Coding Competition 2006 on Psp-almanach.de. The goal is that the game character jumps from platform to platform and does not fall down. Thus the gameplay is very simple, but still with a high fun factor. Be sure to test it!

Dieser Klon des Spiel Icy Tower vom PSPsource-Mitglied fredddy wurde für die LUA Coding Competition 2006 auf Psp-almanach.de erstellt. Ziel ist es, dass die Spielfigur von Plattform zu Plattform springt und nicht herunterfällt. Somit ist das Gameplay sehr simpel, aber dennoch mit hohem Spaßfaktor. Unbedingt testen!

SnakeSP

A Snake clone of a special kind. Here the worm slides across the screen in all directions and can pick up different segment parts. Depending on the segment part, the worm gets different properties, like new/less tail pieces or the worm slows down. What’s special about this game is that it can also be controlled via headphone remote. Well-rounded graphics give the game a fresh start.

Ein Snake-Klon der besonderen Art. Der Wurm gleitet hier in allen Richtungen über den Bildschirm und kann verschiedene Segmentteile aufheben. Je nach Segmentteil bekommt der Wurm andere Eigenschaften, wie neue/weniger Schwanzstücke oder der Wurm wird langsamer. Besonders an diesem Spiel ist, dass die Steuerung auch per Kopfhörerfernbedienung möglich ist. Eine abgerundete Grafik lässt das Spiel frisch durchstarten.
